Background of the Study

As cybersecurity threats evolve in sophistication and frequency, universities face increasing challenges in managing and responding to network attacks. Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, requires an automated system that can efficiently detect, analyze, and respond to network security threats in real-time. The traditional approach to cybersecurity often involves manual intervention, which is time-consuming and prone to errors, especially in large-scale networks (Ajiboye et al., 2023).

Automated Network Threat Response Systems (ANTRS) leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automated workflows to quickly identify and mitigate threats, thereby reducing the window of vulnerability. These systems use preconfigured rules, anomaly detection, and threat intelligence feeds to provide immediate responses to suspicious activities, minimizing the impact of potential security incidents (Olugbenga et al., 2024). Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, can benefit significantly from an ANTRS by improving its response time to cyber threats, reducing manual intervention, and ensuring continuous network protection.

This study aims to design and implement an ANTRS tailored to the needs of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, to enhance the university’s cybersecurity resilience.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, currently faces challenges in responding to network security threats in a timely and efficient manner. Existing manual processes for detecting and mitigating attacks result in delayed responses, leaving the network vulnerable to prolonged damage.

This study seeks to address this issue by implementing an automated threat response system that can proactively detect and neutralize threats in real-time.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current network security threat response mechanisms at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma.

  2. To design an automated network threat response system tailored to the university’s needs.

  3. To implement and assess the performance of the automated threat response system in mitigating network security risks.

Research Questions

  1. What are the limitations of the current network threat response systems at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma?

  2. How can an automated network threat response system improve the university’s ability to detect and mitigate threats?

  3. What is the effectiveness of the implemented automated network threat response system in reducing the impact of cyberattacks?

Significance of the Study

This study will enhance the cybersecurity capabilities of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, by implementing an automated system for faster threat detection and mitigation. The results will help ensure that the university's network remains secure and resilient against evolving cyber threats.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses solely on the implementation of an Automated Network Threat Response System within Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, and will not extend to other cybersecurity measures or systems.

Definitions of Terms

  • Automated Network Threat Response System (ANTRS): A system that uses automation to detect, analyze, and respond to network security threats.

  • Anomaly Detection: Identifying abnormal patterns in network traffic that may indicate a security breach.

  • Threat Intelligence: Data and insights regarding potential or known cyber threats that are used to inform security responses.
